Opel is taking petrolheads back in time with a modern, all-electric rendition of the Manta known as the GSe ElektroMOD.

The first-generation Manta was first introduced to the world in 1970.

The GSe is the most powerful Manta ever built by Opel using an electric motor that generates 108kW and 255Nm. The driver can choose between manually shifting the original four-speed gearbox or simply engaging fourth gear and then driving automatically, with power sent to the rear wheels.

Electrified classic

The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 31kWh, allowing an average range of around 200km. The GSe can also recover braking energy and store it in the battery. At the same time, regular charging occurs via a 9.0kW onboard charger that translates to the battery fully charged in four hours.

Besides the striking neon yellow paint scheme, it also features LED technology and integrated daytime running lights, with new three-dimensional taillights. It also sits on a set of signature lightweight 17-inch Ronal alloys.

In addition, surfaces in the cockpit and door panels are now matte grey. The ceiling of the passenger compartment is lined with Alcantara, and a nostalgic Petri three-spoke steering wheel is also thrown in the mix.

Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller says: "The Manta GSe impressively demonstrates the enthusiasm with which we build cars at Opel. It combines our great Opel tradition with today's commitment to emissions-free mobility for a very desirable, sustainable future. Opel is already electric with many models – and now the legendary Manta is too."

This model is not destined for South Africa.
