At a recent showcase event of Renault's future hybrid technology, we were fittingly able to turn a couple of laps in the latest Renault Megane R.S. 300 Trophy, which is said to be the brand's last hoorah in building a hot hatch as Renault Sport makes way for an electrified future under the Alpine banner.

The French were there in the beginning when hot hatches became a thing in the late 1970s, and this hot hatch formula has developed somewhat incredibly over the last 20 years.

The basic concept of a practical front-wheel drive car with a powerful engine delivered many examples that could have been more dynamically great as they struggled to put all that power down through the front wheels.
