So, opting to tie the knot during a mass wedding was a way to celebrate love without breaking the bank. Despite volcano threats, the local government of a small town in the Philippines decided to host a mass wedding for couples.

There have been reports of a restive volcano in Bicol, Philippines, and many have evacuated the island for safety. Despite this life-threatening natural disaster, the government decided to continue with the event as it was planned prior to the Mayon Volcano alert level being raised. "Life must go on despite the natural disaster that the province is facing, and so the event has to proceed," Mayor Chino Garcia told the Manila Bulletin.

There were 169 couples and the mass wedding event aimed to legalise the unions for free. Couples who participated in the mass wedding and their guests received a cash gift, a sack of rice, wedding cakes and food.
