At least 100 militants killed in attack on Nigerian military base

Kano, Nigeria - More than 100 Boko Haram militants were killed in an attack on a Nigerian army barracks in Goniri area of Yobe state early on Wednesday morning, a military spokesperson said.

Seven soldiers were killed while nine others were wounded in the attack, Colonel Sani Usman said.

"On the last count over 100 terrorists bodies were seen, unfortunately however, seven of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price while defending our fatherland, while one officer and eight soldiers were wounded in action," he said.

Machine guns, AK-47 rifles and rocket-propelled grenades were recovered from the militants.

Meanwhile, at least 16 people died after two suicide bombers attacked a housing estate in north-east Nigeria on Wednesday, the head of the region's emergency services said.

Teenage suicide bombers

The attack happened at the Buhari Housing Estate in the town of Damaturu, also in Yobe state, Alhaji Musa Idi told dpa.

"Two teenage bombers were involved in the explosion at Buhari estate where around 16 persons were killed in the two locations hit this morning," he said.

The 16 dead include the two teenage suicide bombers.

Nigeria has been hit by a spate of bombings in recent years, largely blamed on Boko Haram.

In one of the latest incidents, 18 people died after suicide bombers attacked the towns of Kuje and Nyanya on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital Abuja at the weekend.

On Thursday, four female suicide bombers killed at least 14 people in Maiduguri in north-eastern Nigeria.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state with a strict interpretation of Islamic law, has killed an estimated 14 000 people since 2009.
