Maputo - Mozambique's attorney general says crime has increased by more than ten percent in one year.
Attorney General Beatriz Buchili on Wednesday delivered her annual report to parliament, detailing crime statistics from 2014.
Buchili said crime had risen on average by 10.8%. She said murder and assault had increased nearly 15% and theft and robbery by nearly 14%.
The attorney general said there were 131 more murders reported in 2014, compared to the previous year. She said murders were often committed by shooting, sometimes in "public streets and broad daylight."
She said the wave of kidnappings experienced a few years earlier had decreased slightly.
Buchili told parliament that she hopes the restructuring of the police force will make them more effective.
