Liberian official says corpse tests positive for Ebola

Monrovia - Liberia's deputy health minister says the corpse of a 17-year-old man has tested positive for Ebola.

Tolbert Nyenswah, who also heads Liberia's Ebola response, told The Associated Press on Monday that the teenager died on June 24 in Nedowein, a town close to Liberia's international airport, and was given a safe burial the next day.

He said the man was not tested until after he had died. It was not known how he contracted the disease.

Nyenswah says the case is being investigated, but people should not panic because there are no other known cases in Liberia.

The World Health Organisation declared Liberia Ebola-free on May 9 after the country went 42 days without reporting a case.

The deadly virus, which has killed over 11 100 people mostly in West Africa, remains in neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone.
