Mugabe to speak at Mozambique's independence celebrations

Cape Town – Mozambique is celebrating 40 years of independence at Machaba stadium in Maputo on Thursday, with African Union chair Robert Mugabe expected to give a speech.

According to Zimbabwe’s state-owned newspaper The Herald, Mugabe, who also chairs the Southern African Development Community (SADC), arrived in Mozambique on Wednesday.

This is the first time that the southern African country is celebrating its independence under the leadership of President Filipe Nyusi, who was inaugurated in January.

The country’s founding president, the late Samora Machel, was a close friend of Mugabe.

President Edgar Lungu of Zambia is also attending the event.

Speaking after his arrival, President Lungu said there was a need for African leaders to consolidate unity, love and prosperity for its people, according to the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

Lungu also urged African leaders to ensure that there was equitable distribution of resources among its people, adding that this could be achieved if the continent focused on development through integrating the region.
