Ramaphosa 'encouraged' by Lesotho patriotism

Pretoria - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was encouraged by the deep sense of patriotism among Lesotho's political roleplayers and their determination to help find a lasting solution to their challenges, Ramaphosa's office said on Thursday.

Ramaphosa had travelled to Lesotho where he acted as a Southern African Development Community's facilitator, his spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepe said.

"During the visit... Ramaphosa paid a courtesy [visit] on his Majesty, King Letsie III to brief him about the mandate from the SADC Double Troika plus the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania which met in Pretoria on Monday 15 September to chart the way forward out of the current challenges facing Lesotho," Mamoepe said.

Elections

"Critical among these issues are the agreement by the roleplayers to bring forward elections in Lesotho, the reconvening of parliament as well as the stabilisation of the security situation in the country."

Ramaphosa met with members of the college of chiefs, the main and small opposition political parties as well as three leaders of the coalition government, including Prime Minister Tom Thabane.

"All parties welcomed the visit of the facilitator and his delegation and committed themselves to working with the Southern African Development Community to resolve their challenges," said Ramaphosa.

He concluded his visit on Thursday. He and his delegation would return to Lesotho on Tuesday as part of a series of visits they will make to the neighbouring country.

Earlier this month, Thabane fled Lesotho and crossed the border into South Africa as his country's military took over the country in what was alleged to be an attempted coup.
