Ramaphosa to make 'major' announcement in Lesotho

Johannesburg - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to make a "major" announcement on Thursday relating to his facilitation efforts in Lesotho, his spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.

The announcement would be made at a press briefing in Maseru at 14:00.

"He is expected to be joined in the press conference by leaders of political parties in Lesotho as well as SADC deputy executive secretary Dr Themba Mhlongo," Mamoepa said in a statement.

On Tuesday, two policemen in Lesotho were wounded during a shootout between the force and the military. Ramaphosa subsequently called for an investigation into the shooting.

Ramaphosa was in the country as part of his Southern African Development Community mandate to facilitate talks and find a solution after an attempted coup by the military on 30 August.

This resulted in Lesotho's prime minister Tom Thabane fleeing to South Africa, and its parliament being closed.
