Freetown - Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma on Monday announced that his government would carry out a national census on 06 December 2014, in a nationwide broadcast.
"Today, I am privileged to be proclaiming that another census be undertaken in continuation of the tradition of a national census at least once in a decade," he said.
He noted that Sierra Leone's first census, although partial, was carried out in 1802, shortly after groups of freed slaves were released and made their home in Freetown, under British colonial rule.
The most recent census was undertaken in 2004, after the end of an 11-year war which left about 120 000 people dead. The current population is pinned at 5.6 million, a figure that is heavily disputed by development planners.
