SADC summit to discuss Lesotho, DRC

Cape Town - The political impasse in Lesotho is expected to dominate the agenda at the SADC troika summit to be held in Pretoria on Monday, reports said.

According to SABC, the summit would deal with the ongoing crisis in the mountain kingdom and the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lesotho's deadlocked political parties failed to meet a Friday deadline for a fresh peace deal, prompting South Africa to call an emergency meeting of regional leaders.

On 30 August, an attempted coup by renegade general Tlali Kamoli saw the military assault several police stations prompting Prime Minister Tom Thabane to flee the country.

One Lesotho police officer was killed, and nine others injured in the unrest.

Thabane has since returned, protected by South African guards, but a Pretoria-brokered peace deal quickly disintegrated.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe who is also the current SADC chair reportedly arrived in South Africa on Sunday for the talks.

Mugabe, according to The Herald was accompanied by Zimbabwe’s minister of home affairs Kembo Mohadi, minister of presidential affairs Didymas Mutasa and other senior government officials.

An AFP report said the leaders were sure to face more calls for military intervention, although locals say they are "praying for peace".
