Cape Town – Officials in Cameroon have appealed to the public to donate blood to assist with the treatment of at least 600 people wounded from a train accident, a report said on Monday.
According to BBC, France’s ambassador to the west African country, was one of the high-profile donors, who donated blood.
Reports over the weekend indicated that the train, travelling from the capital Yaounde to the economic hub Douala, was crammed with people due to road traffic disruption between the two cities.
It came off the tracks just before reaching the central Eseke.
More than 70 people were killed.
The train had been carrying at least 1 300 passengers, instead of its capacity of 600. The 30-year-old railway line and train could not carry the load, official were quoted as saying.
A day of mourning was being observed on Monday, with flags flying at half-mast throughout the country.
