Cape Town – A day of mourning is being observed in Cameroon following Friday's train accident that killed more than 70 people, a report says.
According to BBC, flags were flying at half-mast throughout the country on Monday.
Reports over the weekend indicated that the train, travelling from the capital Yaounde to the economic hub Douala, was crammed with people due to road traffic disruption between the two cities when the accident happened.
It came off the tracks just before reaching the central Eseke, Transport Minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o was quoted as saying.
The train had been carrying at least 1 300 passengers, instead of its capacity of 600.
The 30-year-old railway line and train could not carry the load, officials said.
