Egypt arrests 2 for killing Italian student

Cairo - Egyptian police have arrested two suspects in the mysterious killing of an Italian student, a security official said on Friday.

The body of Giulio Regeni was found on Thursday on a highway in Giza, near Cairo, more than a week after he disappeared. The corpse showed signs of torture.

"The security agencies have reached important clues in this case, showing that the incident is a criminal act unrelated to terrorism," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told dpa.

"Details of these clues will be disclosed within hours," the official said without elaborating.

He did not say if the suspects were Egyptians or foreigners.

Regeni, an Italian PhD researcher at Britain's Cambridge University, was reported missing after he had left the house of a friend in downtown Cairo on January 25, the fifth anniversary of the uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosny Mubarak.

State-run newspaper al-Ahram said on Friday that Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi had called Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi the day before and assured him about "constructive collaboration" between both countries in the case.

An Italian team is expected later in Egypt to join investigations into the death of the 28-year-old.

Regeni, 28, had come Egypt to research trade unions in the country after the 2011 revolution.
