Grace Mugabe's alleged assault: Opposition reacts

Harare - Zimbabwe's main opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change party and pro-democracy groups have slammed First Lady Grace Mugabe over her alleged bashing of a model that she reportedly saw in the company of one of her two sons in South Africa.

Grace allegedly assaulted a 20 year-old South African girl, Gabriella Engels over the weekend using an extension cord while her bodyguards looked on. Engels then made a report to the police.

Mugabe regrets army, police clashes in Harare, calls for peace – report

Harare – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has reportedly charged that some elements within the country’s security forces are uncontrollable, adding that the recent clashes between soldiers and the police in Harare were "regrettable and should never again happen".

Mugabe said this while speaking during this year's Heroes Day celebration at the National Heroes Acre in the capital on Tuesday.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, Mugabe told thousands of his supporters that there were certain elements within the security forces that were now uncontrollable.

Nigerians fume as ailing leader passes 100 days abroad

Abuja - Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's 100-day-long overseas medical trip is stoking tensions in the country, as calls grow for him to either return or resign.

Buhari, a northern Muslim, has been in London since May 7 to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment, appointing Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, a southern Christian, to act on his behalf.

There have been series of rallies in Abuja since August 7 over the long absence of the 74-year-old retired general who led a military regime in the 1980s.

Zambia opposition chief freed, treason charge dropped: party

Lusaka - Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema was released from prison Wednesday and treason charges against him were dropped, his party said shortly before his trial was to begin in Lusaka.

"Hakainde Hichilema and his 5 co-accused have been released from prison with the treason charge dropped," the United Party for National Development (UPND) said on its Twitter account.

Hichilema has been in custody since April over an incident in which he allegedly failed to give way to President Edgar Lungu's motorcade.

Kenya minister blocks actions against NGOs after election

Nairobi - Kenya's interior minister on Wednesday blocked an attempt to de-register two civil society groups that pointed out anomalies in last week's presidential election, while opposition leader Raila Odinga was expected to announce next steps in disputing what he has called vote-rigging.

The National Non-governmental Organizations Board this week said it de-registered the Kenya Human Rights Commission and called for the arrest of the directors of the Africa Centre for Open Governance. Both groups monitored the August 8 vote in which President Uhuru Kenyatta won a second term amid opposition claims of vote-rigging.

Kenya's defeated Odinga to take poll dispute to top court

Nairobi - Opposition leader Raila Odinga said on Wednesday he would take his claims that Kenya's presidential election was rigged to the Supreme Court, after previously refusing to do so, and vowed to protest peacefully.

"We have now decided to move to the Supreme Court and lay before the world the making of a computer-generated leadership," he told journalists.

He also called for peaceful forms of protest, recalling that the rights to demonstrate, strike and carry out acts of civil disobedience were enshrined in the constitution.
