Villagers suffer under Lungu - headman

Monze - Zambians in the country's rural areas have suffered under President Edgar Lungu, according to a headman in Monze district.

They looked "like an unmarried woman who has been abandoned after being impregnated by an irresponsible man", the headman, identified only as Mwaala, told leaders of the opposition Rainbow Party, The Post reported.

"Now that we voted for them after they cheated us with promises of more money in the pocket, jobs, and better life, they have run away," Mwaala was quoted as saying.

He criticised Lungu for implementing a Constitution which he said excluded rural areas from taking part in politics.

Last month, Rainbow Party secretary general, Wynter Kabimba, the former minister of justice, criticised Lungu for amending the Constitution in what he said was a bid to turn Zambia into a one-party state.

He singled out a clause allowing the president to dissolve Parliament if it did not objectively and reasonably discharge its functions.

Zambia would select its next leader on August 11.
