I’ve no preferred successor – Mugabe

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he has assessed aspirants angling to succeed him and has no preferred candidate.

According to The Herald, Mugabe said this during a rare interview with Ghanaian-born British journalist and film-maker Roy Agyemang for a BBC documentary titled "Robert Mugabe @ 90".

Mugabe said he had people in mind that he thought could succeed him but he had failed to come to a conclusion. He said he had decided to leave it to the "choice of people".

The 90-year-old veteran leader said people would elect their next leader.

The issue of succession remains one of the biggest problems currently facing Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party.

Vice President Joice Mujuru, and Justice Minister and Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Emmerson Mnangagwa have been touted as front runners to succeed Mugabe in various sections of the media.

Mugabe has been in power since the country's independence in 1980.
