Cape Town – Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) youths are reportedly planning to stage nationwide demonstrations to demand jobs, as Zimbabwe's economy continues to dwindle.
According to New Zimbabwe.com, the MDC National Youth Assembly spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo said members were angry because of increased unemployment in the country.
Reports indicate that Zimbabwe's unemployment rate is at over 80% but the government puts it at 11% arguing that most people are now employed in the informal sector.
Hlatywayo said the youths were prepared to take to the streets and that it was their right to do so.
Massive job losses
A News Day report quoted Hlatywayo as saying President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party was responsible for massive job losses due to its populist policies that scared away investors.
Hlatywayo said Zanu-PF in its July 2013 manifesto promised 2,2 million jobs to the people "but the reverse is true".
He said young people were tired of Zanu-PF's unfruitful promises since 1980 when the country attained independence.
But police chief spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said law enforcement agencies would not entertain illegal demonstrations.
Charamba said there were channels to follow if the youths wanted to demonstrate.
