Moscow – Zimbabwean students in Russia have reportedly begged Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo for assistance as they claimed to be "starving" after being abandoned by President Robert Mugabe’s government.
According to New Zimbabwe.com, a student leader in Russia said nothing had come of representations to Department of Scholarship Minister Christopher Mushohwe.
In a note sent to Moyo, the student leader, Hubert Nyabadza, has accused Mushohwe of doing nothing while the students’ situation was desperate and in need of immediate intervention.
Nyabadza said: “We are starving Sir, some of us want to go back home. Mr Mushowe hasn't done anything about it. Please inform him about this matter please if you can."
He added, "We are starving and some of my fellow student might be expelled from school because of unpaid debts. We are never given money. We do not know who to talk to, the ones we talk to always tell us there is no money in government…"
Moyo has since promised the student to forward the note as a "matter of urgency".
This reportedly comes amid reports that President Mugabe was set to attend a World Heal Organisation (WHO) conference in Uruguay while his wife Grace Mugabe was heading to Russia for a youth festival.
According to The Zimbabwe Mail, the Zanu-PF leader ordinarily blows over $10m on each trip that draws a huge entourage of dozens of hangers on who are guaranteed State funded allowances.
Information Minister Simon Khaya Moyo confirmed Mugabe would be travelling.
"It’s what I hear [that Mugabe is travelling] but I do not have details. Check with [Presidential spokesperson] George Charamba," Khaya Moyo was quoted as saying.
