Use all available resources to empower people and give them a stake in the economy to undermine inequality.

Give people enough free urban land to live on and provide land and support for all those who want to be farmers.

Restore the integrity of the criminal justice system and the efficiency and accountability of the police, special investigation units and SARS.

Implement the national development plan and do everything possible to grow the economy and create job opportunities, because social and economic transformation is virtually impossible during a recession.

When you start doing this, comrades of the ANC, you may call yourself revolutionaries once again, writes Max du Preez.

Life was better under apartheid: When freedom is no longer enough

“Life was better under apartheid”, Phiwe* said to me.

Five simple words repeated, more or less word for word, as I facilitated intergenerational focus group discussions with youth in rural and urban spaces in three provinces, in the past two months.

As I listened to these words in various rooms in Warrenton, Vryheid and Cape Town the life experiences of the Phiwes, Chantels and Boitumelos kept flashing in my mind.

Taken on its own it is alarming. Taken as a response to a question about their experiences in post-apartheid South Africa, it tells us that as a nation we are failing our youth, writes Eleanor du Plooy.

How South Africa can stop political interference into who gets prosecuted

Why has the prosecuting authority failed to prosecute? The reason is that the law has struggled to create the independence necessary for prosecutors to pursue charges against prominent members of the executive. South Africa isn’t alone in this. The US has struggled too.

My suggestion is to establish a separate special prosecuting office that deals only with political cases – that is, those involving members of the executive and the legislature. The usefulness of a special prosecutor was stress tested in 1973 during the US President Richard Nixon debacle. The purpose is to create a greater measure of independence, although the Nixon case also showed that it can be subject to political interference. He had three removed, writes Jameelah Omar.
