Cape Town - Public protector Thuli Madonsela has launched an investigation into whether the ANC has used state resources for its electoral campaign.
According to the Sunday Times, Madonsela’s office has confirmed that it is investigating three cases of alleged abuse of state resources that involve the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), the Department of Social Development and the Gauteng provincial government.
This comes after an outcry by opposition parties over the ANC’s penchant for handing out food parcels, blankets and toiletries at their election rallies as well as the issue of billboards in Gauteng that were paid for by the provincial government but that carry the ANC colours.
However, Madonsela’s spokesperson Oupa Segalwe said that the public protector was conducting a preliminary investigation into the billboard issue and would contact the Independent Electoral Commission to see whether it was not the correct body to investigate this complaint.
Abuse of state resources
Earlier this month the
DA accused the ANC of abusing state resources for its electoral
campaign after a state agency was seen handing out branded blankets and
parcels of toiletries at an ANC rally in Parys in the Free State.
According to the Sunday Independent, DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane said the Parys event was only the tip of the iceberg and that there is chronic blurring of the lines between state and party. He said the ANC does not understand the difference.
This came after the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) handed out blankets and toiletries to a few hundred elderly ANC supporters who had arrived to hear President Jacob Zuma speak.
However, ANC spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe said the party did not know Sassa would be there.
