Mbete alludes to a closer ANC, NFP relationship

Cape Town - ANC national chairperson Baleka Mbete suggested on Thursday the party could have a closer relationship with the National Freedom Party (NFP) in KwaZulu-Natal after the 7 May elections.

She told reporters in Cape Town the split of the NFP from the IFP and the ability of the party to work with the ANC in certain communities and councils was promising.

"We should wait and see what is going to happen after the results have been announced after the election.

"I am thinking that because the leader of the NFP is aiming to come to the national Parliament, who knows what is possible."

She said nothing could be pre-empted until after the election results on 7 May.

The defection of more than 100 IFP members to the ANC two weeks ago was a very important development that would have a cascade effect on the province.

"Clearly, the numbers or the percentages of support for the IFP are going to be drastically reduced," Mbete said.

In the Western Cape, Mbete said the party had been approached by parties operating at both provincial and national level, the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in particular.

In 2009 the ANC only managed to get 32.86% of the votes in the Western Cape. (See News24's election drill down here.)

"This is a party who have reached a point where many quite senior people... are tired of functioning under a person who functions like a traditional leader, a person to whom running a political party is like running a fiefdom."

She said fed-up members of the party had told her "gory details" about the message that was being spread about the ANC.

"I think in particular in this province, it is possible for us to be able to get a lot of people coming from the ranks of the ACDP who are just tired."

Mbete said many political parties were beginning to crumble because they had observed the ANC was the only party that could take the country forward.
