Cape Town - The National Union of Metalwokers of SA (Numsa) has not only reiterated its call for President Jacob Zuma to resign but it is also preparing for life outside of Cosatu.
According to the Sunday Independent, Numsa is expected to approach former cabinet ministers, who have fallen out with the ruling party, to get advice on moving forward. Among these are Ronnie Kasrils, Jay Naidoo and Pallo Jordan.
In a draft secretariat report Numsa states that the ANC is part of the problem in Cosatu – because of its anti-worker policies.
The newspaper reports that Numsa has accepted that it is likely to be expelled from Cosatu.
Numsa, Cosatu's largest affiliate, has been at loggerheads with the trade union federation after the suspension of general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi eight months ago. Numsa opposed Vavi's suspension and was successful in its application to the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg challenging the decision.
Numsa has also gone against Cosatu in deciding not to support the ANC in this year's general election and calling for a Cosatu special national congress so that new leadership can be elected.
However, Vavi’s position in Cosatu will be greatly weakened without Numsa. But action against Numsa is on hold until after the 7 May election.
