Johannesburg - DA chairperson of the federal council James Selfe said those in his party responsible for clinching a coalition deal with the ANC in Kannaland municipality would be disciplined.
Speaking at a press conference in Sandton on the party’s coalition choices, Selfe told reporters the deal wasn’t sanctioned by the party’s top structures.
What appears to be the situation there is that some local structures of the party engaged in some unauthorised agreement with the ANC, and this is subject to an investigation by our party,” he said.
“If it is found that the people acted outside their mandate, then disciplinary steps will be taken against them, and the DA speaker that was elected yesterday will be required to resign.”
Icosa, which won almost 50% of the votes in that municipality, earlier this week expressed shock at the coalition.
A report on the details of the deal is expected at a meeting this weekend, said Jabu Mfusi, adding that the ANC had been in a coalition with Icosa before the August 3 local government elections.
"Yes, it is true," said Icosa Western Cape provincial leader Dawid Kamfer. "The ANC and the DA have climbed into bed with each other."
Kamfer said it was a complete shock, especially after the relatively small party racked up 48% of the vote in Kannaland, and increased its support in the Western Cape from seven councillors to 12 after the elections.
But what made it more galling was that the DA had said it would never go into a coalition with the ANC, he said.
Kannaland has a long history of controversial and collapsing coalitions starting with the first ANC/DA coalition in 2006. At the time, Truman Prince led Icosa, after being kicked out of the ANC.
