Holomisa tells UDM candidates to use first salary to fix supporter's house

Port Elizabeth - UDM leader Bantu Holomisa on Friday told a mayoral and a councillor candidate to use their first salary to fix an elderly woman’s house in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Holomisa visited Angelina Kayi’s RDP home during a door-to-door visit in Ward 18, Kwazakhele, with his mayoral candidate Mongameli Bobani and councillor candidate Nolulu Ngqambuza.

The walls had cracks large enough for a toddler to fit through. The 62-year-old woman’s house had been falling apart for years and the municipality had never fixed it, she said.

The cracks were stuffed with old clothing, like jackets and overalls, but that was not enough to keep the cold out, Kayi told Holomisa. Her brother, Zweni, was always getting sick as a result.

"The cracks are so huge that rats, big ones, come through," she said.

Holomisa introduced Ngqambuza and Bobani to the grandmother, and pledged the party’s help.

"I want you to lead by example. Don’t buy a new car with your new salary. I want you to come back here and fix this house. Get the material and builders and fix it," he told them.

If the councillor candidate did not get elected, then Bobani should fix it, he said.

"I want to come back here in August to officially open this house. So make it happen," Holomisa said.

Kayi said she would be delighted if the damage was repaired and hoped the party would keep its promise.
