'Poo protester' Lili allegedly held hostage by protesting Khayelitsha residents

Cape Town - "Poo protester" and ANC Western Cape provincial executive committee member Andile Lili has claimed he was held hostage by protesting residents in Khayelitsha, Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.

He told News24 that he went to Site C to announce the party's candidate for the area.

“After I introduced the candidate, some unhappy community members wanted to burn tyres in front of the gate [where I was],” he said.

Lili said the residents then threatened him. Their anger was apparently fuelled by previous corruption in local wards.

“They told me that I am not getting out of this gate today."

Lili said the residents kept him from leaving from about 15:00, and eventually let him go two hours later.

He said there was no need for this kind of behaviour.

When asked about the incident police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said she could not confirm details since she was not in Khayelitsha.

“All I know is that he [Lili] went there to address the people in Khayelitsha and they started protesting."

She said police were monitoring the scene.

Lili and eight others were sentenced for violating the Civil Aviation Act by dumping human excrement at Cape Town International Airport in 2013, in protest against the City of Cape Town providing portable toilets in informal settlements. They wanted fixed toilets.

He was sentenced to 36 months in jail, suspended for five years.
