102 rhino killed this year

Johannesburg - A total of 102 rhino have been killed since the beginning of the year, the department of environmental affairs said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Albi Modise said the Kruger National Park (KNP) was the hardest hit, with four rhino being killed there this week alone.

A total of 70 KNP rhino have been killed since 1 January.

"In the past 48 hours five alleged poachers were arrested in Limpopo and one in the KNP. This means a total of 40 alleged poachers, among them three alleged couriers, have been arrested since the beginning of the year," said Modise.

Police officers recovered ammunition, rifles and a silencer from the suspected poachers.

A total of 11 rhino have been poached in the North West, 10 in KwaZulu-Natal, seven in Limpopo and four in Mpumalanga.

Modise said while the numbers remained high, there was a slight drop in the number of rhino killed per week.

"[It] may be attributed to the implementation of the turnaround strategy aimed at eliminating poaching by the SA National Parks," he said.

Last year, the country recorded that three rhino were being poached per week.

This year, the number had dropped to two.

Over 630 rhino were killed by poachers in 2012.

And still they don't get it. Ever since the Defence Froce was given access to Kruger poaching has escalated. They come and go as they please, no restrictions on where they go, no searches in or out, all the weapons they need. !@#$% sakes, WAKE UP!! We need a completely independent and automomous anti-poaching unit headed up by top investigators and forensic scientists. The top people in both the Defence Force and SANParks are involved, all efforts that involve them will fail.

Zuma does not know what a rhino is. otherwise he would protect them

It doesn't take a moron to realise something is wrong despite all the effort and money raised. Where is the money going ? Rather use it to build RDP houses and e-tolls.

It seems the death of rhinos receive more sympathy than the death of human beings in newspapers. I believe a higher number of human beings have been slaughtered since the beginning of the year.

Fortunately the human race breeds like rabbits, unfortunately our rhinos don't.
