Mozambique: Harder sentences for rhino poachers

Cape Town – The government of Mozambique has placed tougher penalties and sentences for rhino poachers, seen by many as a step in the right direction.

According to a report on IOL the lack of enforcement by Mozambique has been seen as a direct reason for the plethora of rhino poaching in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

Since the beginning of this year 200 rhino have been poached just in South Africa alone, mostly from the Kruger Park.

Mozambique’s lenient sentences for poaching have also been a major concern for animal activists and it hoped that the laws will address this issue.

The government has been experiencing a huge amount of pressure and criticism from a number of conservationists and specifically from the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites).

Mozambique passed the Conservation Areas Act this month and according to Environment Minister Edna Molewa the act will help fight deter wildlife crime plaguing both South Africa and Mozambique.

This comment was made during a memorandum of understanding between South Africa and Mozambique in the field of conservation and biodiversity.

The memorandum highlighted the two countries commitment to work with Cites and other bodies that call for better action toward saving endangered wildlife.
