Johannesburg - A dehydrated baby rhino has been rescued a week after its mother was dehorned and killed, paramedics said on Friday.
Care for Wild Africa, based in Mpumalanga, called paramedics to help revive the weak eight-month-old black rhino named Thor, said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.
"His mother's horn was taken after she was shot. He was taken to the Care for Wild Africa farm. He almost died and stopped breathing in the helicopter when he was rescued," founder of Care for Wild Africa Petronel Nieuwoudt was quoted as saying.
Care for Wild Africa cares for injured and abandoned animals. The organisation works closely with the Kruger National Park and the Mpumalanga Parks Board.
The little rhino survived after it was rehydrated with dextrose and milk. Its rescuers saved its life by getting fluids into it and getting its glucose levels up, Bodasing said.
