Two young Czech adventurers set sail from Czech Nymburk to Hamburg in Germany, on a pedal boat made entirely of empty plastic bottles.
Now this is recycling. A group of Czech adventurers built a pedal boat out of plastic bottles and are making their way down the Elbe River from the Czech town of Nymburk to Hamburg in Germany.
Boat captain Honza Kara said "we started our float on Saturday with a great audience around. The stretch from Nymburk to Hamburg is about 850km long. Our boat is made from bottles and it took us eight months to build it."
Every good boat needs a name, and this one is called the Petburg, after PET bottles used in its construction.
The boat is powered by a 5 horsepower engine and a makeshift propeller that is attached to bike pedals.
To keep the vessel bouyant, the bottles have been filled with dry ice. Captain Honza Kara says there will be plenty of time to take in the scenery along the way.
"Our floating speed is like 3 to 3,5km/h and anyone can overtake us just walking on the bank.”
The group hopes to reach Hamburg in a month and plans to completely recycle the boat after their journey.
