Firearm legislation: The politics of gun control in South Africa

accreditation

Parliament's police committee organised the National Firearms Summit in Parliament last week to address the recent suggestion made by President Zuma to tighten gun control in South Africa.

The summit hosted various interest groups in order to discuss a shift in legislation and find ways to address concerns relating to gun possession and legislation in SA.

This week our hosts Jerusha Sukhdeo-Raath and Noxolo Mafu are joined in studio by Gun Free South Africa spokesperson Adele Kirsten and South Africa Gun Owner's Association spokesperson John Welch as they discuss the concerns relating to firearm legislation.

Watch.

The value of more gun amnesty programmes in SA

South Africa has implemented a number of amnesty programmes as a way to reduce the number of illegal fire arms in the country. 2005 saw the most successful implementation of the programme with around 100 000 guns handed over to authorities, however there are elements of the programme which have been left unanswered.

Watch as our guests take on these issues; we also look at the success of international amnesty programmes.

Points of contention on current firearm legislation

The National Firearms Summit showed areas of agreement for the different associations.

Watch as we find out what our guests do not agree on when it comes to South Africa's firearm legislation and its proposed amendments:

The illicit gun trade is the biggest issue

South Africa currently has 1.8 million licensed gun owners, however the high crime rate in South Africa is fuelled by the illicit trade of firearms.

Watch as our guests weigh in on the matter:

Does the presence of a gun in SA homes put families at risk?

The current motion to limit the number of firearms in a household has been received with mixed reviews from a number of interest groups.

Adele Kirsten of GFSA states the mere presence of a firearm in a household can only elevate the level of violence in South Africa. In contrast, John Welch of South African Gun Association says the choice to have more than one firearm should be allowed if attained legally.
