A study conducted by the South African Institute of Race Relations entitled, Broken Blue Line 2, says that out of 9055 reports made to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate against SAPS members in 2013/14, 6025 were related to torture and assault.
This week our hosts Jerusha Sukdeao-Raath and Noxolo Mafu are joined in studio by Director at PASSOP, Braam Hannekom, and Dr Johan Burger who is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Security Studies to talk about the implications of police brutality in South Africa.
"The police need to decide whether they are a police force or a police service" - Braam Hannekom
Our studio experts Braam Hannekom and Dr Johan Burger tackle the issue of violence and force within the SAPS. The distinction between serving as a police force or police service appear to be a critical point of contention for SA police.
Watch as our guests discuss the importance of such a distinction:
Public perception on the role of the police
We took to the streets of Cape Town to try understand what people think about the police. Do members of the public trust SAPS to fulfill their role efficiently?
Watch as members of the public and our guests weigh in:
What can be done to better manage the police service in South Africa?
Dr Johan Burger suggests the the improvement of the police service is dependent on a thorough audit of personnel who are hired to serve. This audit would include the check of the commanders who lead these units.
