WATCH: Dramatic CCTV footage emerges of KZN AK47 heist

Video footage has emerged online of a recent armed robbery that occurred in Pietermaritzburg, KZN.

The CCTV footage shows a gang of 17 targeting a prominent Mountain Rise businessman outside his house.

According to The Witness, it is thought that the man had been followed home and had just entered his yard when the men approached in two vehicles, an SUV and a Mercedes.

The attackers all armed with pistols, AK-47 rifles and balaclava hats are seen taking control of the vicinity before proceeding into the property with the owner as a hostage.

IOL also reported that a distress call was made to two security firm owners who rushed to the scene to help. As they arrived on the scene, the criminals opened fire.

Security boss, Shaheen Suleiman explained, “We took cover and fired back. I’ve been involved in a lot of shoot-outs before, including cash-in-heist transits, but this one was different. These guys were well organised and had spotter cars everywhere.”

After a brief stand-off the attackers then fled the scene in three vehicles.

Suleiman sustained a gunshot wound to his face. The Witness reported that according to a police source, the gunmen made off with an amount of about R10 000 cash.

Two vehicles involved in the heist were found spattered with bullet holes.

Mountain Rise police head of detectives, Colonel Chris Wiles, said the owner of the house was assaulted with the butt of a firearm and no arrests had been made so far.
