Jacaranda FM’s journalist Maryke Vermaak captured this violent scene from the Johannesburg CBD earlier on Wednesday and uploaded it to YouTube. WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT.
News24 was on the ground in the Joburg CBD and spoke to the Ethiopian man identified as Mengstu Hailemariam who has been in South Africa since 1997.
"I was walking past a group of Nigerian. There was a crowd of foreigners standing outside, they had all closed their shops. The taxi drivers driving past started shouting that foreigners must go back home. So I started asking them why they want us to go, because we are here to work. Then someone walking along the street threw a brick, by the time he hit me all those other guys that were standing around came to fight him too."
