accreditation

SABC's chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has again called for more media regulation in South Africa.

In an interview with Rapport editor, Waldimar Pelser on KykNet's Insig the SABC's chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng started off by criticising journalists for inaccurate reporting and explains why the media needs to be regulated. Watch.

"Journalists don't do what they are supposed to do. When they report they are not factual on their reporting."

8 minutes into this TV segment when asked for an example of where a journalist got his or her facts wrong Motsoeneng replied, "Maybe we need to understand the role of media. The role of media is to influence the mindset of people, young and old. Let's take example [sic] - the young ones. If you always put crime on media, you report about crime... actually what you are doing you are encouraging young people to commit crime."

Pelser responded, "What do you think then is the consequence of reporting about corruption?"

IOL have reported that the SABC has distanced itself from its chief operations officers calls for media regulation.

Said the SABC: “Mr. Motsoeneng as a citizen of the Republic has a right to express his views as enshrined in the constitution of South Africa in respect to freedom of speech. It is therefore imperative that the DA does not make an insinuation that this statement is the official pronouncement of the SABC, and to therefore draw the SABC into this matter is unfortunate and reckless.”
