Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane recalls the "bitter" State of the Nation Address (SONA) in 2015. Looking at footage from the previous event he says it was "a reminder for South Africans of how quickly democracy can be foregone".
The politician listed the signal jammer and security personnel as what stood out in his memory. "Those memories are bitter. I remember how incense I felt going into last year's State of the Nation Address because I realised more than anything it was our democracy at stake."
Maimane spoke to News24 ahead of President Jacob Zuma's address on Thursday, 11 February 2016. Last year the DA walked out of Parliament after Maimane asked Speaker Baleka Mbete for details on the identity of armed men in white shirts who forcibly removed members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from the National Assembly.
Other clips from the same interview cover the Nkandla case in the Constitutional Court, Maimane's opinion of the African National Congress (ANC) and reconciliation. Watch the video and share your views with News24 via Twitter.
