To some, coffee is like the R5 coin you need to start the ride at an amusement park – without it there is no chance of regular human functioning or interaction. Research has shown that our morning meth-in-a-cup holds many health benefits to those who sip it, so here are five reasons to grab a cup of the good stuff pronto!
1. Have a (good) heart
A Japanese study found that people who drank a cup of coffee a day were 20% less likely to suffer from a stroke, and reduced their risk of heart disease by 16%! Caffeine has also been proven to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
2. Deflect depression
Finland conducted research on those who drank the most coffee, and found that men who sipped the brown buzz were 77% less likely to develop depression than their zero coffee drinking counterparts.
3. Mela-no no!
Researchers from the National Cancer Institute found that people who drank 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day were 20% less likely to develop melanoma (the most serious of skin cancers), as compared to people who drank no coffee at all.
4. Say ‘die’ to diabetes
Harvard researchers, conducting 28 studies with more than 1 million participants, found a strong link between coffee and diabetes prevention. One cup a day reduces your risk by 8%, and downing six cups a day will cut your risk of developing diabetes by a whopping 33%!
5. Kidney stones? No thanks!
Deemed more painful than childbirth by some (mostly men), passing kidney stones can be prevented by drinking as little as one cup of coffee per day. Harvard research revealed that individuals who grabbed a cuppa’ Joe once or more a day were 26% less likely to develop kidney stones, as caffeine increases urination – flushing excess calcium and sodium that can contribute to the development of man’s least favourite pebble.
While coffee is now arguably a preventative medicine, experts suggest that water is consumed between cups of coffee. As the caffeine dehydrates you, taking a few glugs of water after a cup of Joe will keep your hydration levels normal.
