With the current bruhaha about suspending Christian or religious holidays, as for me its long ovetdue!
I am not into Christmas, yes, I just flow with the spirit of it but there is nothing that makes me become excited when this day comes; and I think I can speak for a fair number of Africans as well on this issue. To a white person it would sound weird or stupid for me to say that; but with due respect to Christians and those who celebrate the day; the truth is that I personally cannot place this day on my African spiritual calendar as a day to celebrated or look forward to. But due to the popularity and consumerist nature of the day I find myself getting presents and being wished a blessed Christmas and so forth, but to me that all is irrelevant because I just wish that the day would pass so I can continue with my life as normal. For us Africans this time of the season is for reconnecting with your ancestors family and do stuff that you have saved for like paying ilobolo or getting married.
Normally it’s during this time of the year that we Africans all across the continent migrate to our rural bastions, with loads of essential items and money; which we collect and save for families back home. As much as we say we are going home for Christmas, we actually mean we are going to have traditional ceremonies to appease our ancestors. To all those who celebrate Christmas Merry Christmas!!
