Calling all Christians - do you ever question what you believe and why you believe it?

Calling all Christians - do you ever question what you believe and why you believe it?

As the modern age marches on, it waits for nobody and sadly time has left many Christians behind, stuck in the Church age, but it has also delightfully caused doubt in a growing number of Christians who have dumped God worship on Sundays for more enjoyable things. It’s just a sign of the times.

Today the youth sate their desire for knowledge at the feet of qualified professors rather than priests, pastors and theologians as in days gone bye. Yet the age-old debate on the existence of God somehow still rages on. The question should by now be settled, but those areas in South Africa where the collective IQ hasn’t exceeded 57 still have people who are clinging tightly to mom and dad’s faith.

The seeds of doubt are first planted by common sense questions and healthy brains at work. So have you ever questioned what you believe and why you believe it? I grant you that this is a hard thing to do; in fact it’s so hard that most people on this planet live their whole lives without questioning their dogmatic assertions.

Billions of people have died holding very strong beliefs that they have never questioned. Can you imagine living your whole life as a committed Christian, dying at a ripe old age and never having known that you were wrong in being insanely confident about your faith? You will never know that mere human beings penned the Bible and created Christian doctrines.

It’s time for you to wrestle with cognitive dissonance and disillusionment, and forge an updated understanding of the universe. I will be honest; this will be one of the hardest things you have ever done in your life. I know it’s not easy to admit that you were wrong but are you honest and brave enough to give it a try?

You will loose friends, respect, belonging, affirmation, and affection. But isn't the pursuit of truth and integrity worth it, after all has been said and done?

One of the things I have noticed in communion with Christians on mynews24 is they are hard to deal with because of their belief system and their world view. It is almost impossible to talk rationally about God and their beliefs. They can quote snippets of the Bible with such forceful authority that it can make your head hurt.

They speak as if their opinion is the God-sanctioned truth and they have a direct two way hotline to God himself. Things are so much simpler when you look at life from a natural point of view instead of a spiritual one. There are no supernatural beings – not Gods, nor angels, nor demons. There are no miracles, no mystical elements, and no revelations. Natural phenomena is, well… natural, things happen because they do.

Humanity is beautiful - there is as much an abundance of good, if not more, in the world than there is bad. We live, we die, and we create our own meaning in life. Try walking around one day with that view of life and see what happens.

So why do you believe like you do? Why do you think :-

1. Jesus is the creator?

2. Jesus is Lord and Saviour?

3. Jesus is coming back again to fetch his Church the bride of Christ?

4. Jesus has mansions in heaven for the faithful?

5. Jesus will cast all nonbelievers into hell?

We live in a world where facts and fiction get blurred
