I think creationist have it all wrong. No not that creation did not happen, I’m not going to argue that today, but rather the purpose they assign to creation is wrong. While I’ll be arguing from a Western Christian perspective I think it can be extrapolated to other religions because they all assign the purpose of creation to be man. I also think that it can be used for a young or old earth.
The mistake and bias is understandable and, to my mind, can be understood because it was man who created the religion and the creation story. The mistake was also easy to make because the people, at the time, did not know any better. Please note I’m not saying that the people were unintelligent only that they had a small knowledge base. In fact the people were just as intelligent as we are today; we still use their inventions today like agriculture, writing, mathematics and concrete to name a few.
Where they went wrong is they did not know about microbial life and who could have known that such a small life could be so important to all other life? Let’s have a quick look at why this type of life is so important.
Since life has been on this planet 80% of the time the only life was microbial, that is a high percentage and very long time (80% of 4 E 9 is 3 200 000 000 years, rounded up for ease). There is a lot of iron in the universe and on the young earth our oceans were full of iron. If it was not for microbes, giving off oxygen as a waste product, our oceans would still be full of iron. Also without those microbes we would not have any oxygen to breath and multicellular life probably would not have gotten to where it is today.
Even today microbes play a vital roll in all life. Let’s look at it like this. Say for instance we remove all the mammals off the planet, other life would carry on without a problem, sure some, the ones that rely on mammals, would go extinct but the rest of life would be fine. It would be a different story if all the plants disappeared, it would be devastating for most life but not so much for the microbes. If all the microbes disappear all other life will go extinct. All life, in one way or another, relies on microbes to survive.
Sex, most reader’s favorite pastime, could have started because of microbes. The hypothesis is that sex started to ward off parasitic invasion or in other words to stop dieing from sickness. It will take to long to explain now but the only reason you have sex could be because of microbes.
I won’t even go into how our overuse of antibiotics has killed off some of the helpful microbes and this is why we see an increase in obesity and diabetes.
Without even going into evolution hopefully I’ve shown how important microbes were not only in the formation of other types of organisms but also how they continue to play a vital part of all life. One could say that all other life is incidental and bases its existence on the humble microbe.
With all this in mind one can see that this planet is a planet of the microbes and one can see that if there was a Creator they made this planet for them and not man.
