They started running at midnight Saturday past from Pretoria, have been and will doing so for 24 hours a day in relay fashion until they reach Laingsburg. Two runners run at a time for 20km before they hand over to another pair of runners for their 20km stretch. At this point in time they are running between Britstown and Vitoria West.
They will arrive in Laingsburg on Friday(3/10/2014), joined by more athletes from Cape Town, Laingsburg and other places for the final strech. To top the whole week of running off, they will then compete in the Karoo Ultra Marathon on Saturday 4th October, which is a distance of 80km. This comes down to a distance of 1250km in 6 days + 80 km.
Why is this news worthy and what is their ultimate goal? Well besides the point that they are all great athletes, they are doing so in aid of an organisation called Jumping Kids. Jumping Kids gifts the gift of ability to child-amputees and this group of runners are trying to collect funds and donations for this organisation. Such a great cause being supported by people who are able.
