So, to start with I am going to expose my bias towards E-Cigarettes (From here on forth known as Vaping). I have been a smoker for 17 years. I decided to start vaping. I did not believe in the concept, but much to my surprise it actually worked!
I soon found myself not needing cigarettes at all and decided to take the leap and become a “pure” vaper.
Therefore I am a little bit biased when it comes to E-cigarettes v.s the real thing. Now that it is out of the way I can get to the point of this article. (And in addition to all the bias let me make it worse! I run a small vape shope).
The major point I want to get through is: If you do not smoke/vape don’t start. It is a general agreement amongst doctors (and in my view general logic too) that ANYTHING except for fresh air is BAD for you!
E-Cigarette Hardware: Batteries
It is important to buy good hardware (batteries, clearomisers, coils, tanks) from reputable VapeShops and suppliers of said equipment. A cheap badly constructed battery (most cases the non-certified cheap imports) have been known to cause injury worldwide. I am not aware of any incidents in South Africa as of yet.
Brands such as INNOKIN as well as Kangertech are well established worldwide and have high safety standards as well as amazing functionality. They are more effective than a certain well-known brand available in malls countrywide, and much better priced! Many established VapeShops offer these brands.
One does not want to buy cheap hardware from shoddy suppliers looking to make a quick buck on the side. International articles have shown exploding batteries nearly killing people, and starting fires that killed others! The common denominator is that all those batteries were cheap, and had no manual or after sales service and support (a warranty as it should be).
To compare it, these are batteries with specific functionality design. They are rechargeable. If you buy cheap rechargeable batteries for your kid’s toys, they run the same risk of an exploding battery as you would with a cheap nasty vaping battery.
E-Liquids: Suppliers
Unfortunately there are suppliers worldwide that chuck any junk and nicotine into E-Liquids as it raises profits to ridiculous levels. They “cut” the e-liquids with cheap substances, that are hazardous, and in some cases even 10 times as worse as a normal cigarette. Again it is important to do your research and to buy from a REPUTABLE VapeShop. If you pay less than R80 for a 20ml bottle, then I would be sceptical about the bottles contents.
There are many more aspects to the concept of Vaping, these include RBA’s, Drip Tips, Mechs, and Mod’s. If there is enough interest on this article, I will be sure to follow it up with more information.
In the meantime, if you are looking for more information about the abovementioned aspects of vaping covered/not covered, google is full of information from both sides of the coin.
I hope this generates interest or is of interest sufficiently enough that I will be back with another vaping article soon.
Thank you for reading

P.S, it takes 20% willpower to stop cigarettes when vaping. I still feel for a smoke once in a while when others smoke, then I just remind myself of the goalpost. J
