What a marvellous move by KwaZulu Natal Sadtu to launch a TV channel dedicated to learners and teachers. The initiative will ensure an easy dispersal of information and knowledge while also combating poor quality in teaching. The TV channel will make a huge impact when it comes to the improvement of matric pass rate this year.
This is a powerful sign that in KZN education is being taken as number priority, which is totally correct. But my uncomplicated question is; Isn’t the Kwazulu Natal Department of Education aware that not every household/learner owns a DSTV decoder or smartphone? They are indicating that lessons will be broadcast on DStv channel 319?
Even though I haven’t got an answer yet, these kinds of initiatives should be spread to other provinces that are seriously struggling when it comes to matric pass rate. For example, in Limpopo and Eastern Cape it would assist teachers who are not well qualified to teach particular subjects and pupils who are slow to grasp information.
Leadership that is battling to simplify the access of education to disadvantaged teachers and learners in the country should be highly supported, because even South Africa’s first black president, the late Nelson Mandela stated that: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” So let’s keep on helping and supporting learners to get the powerful weapon as we celebrate Mandela Month.
