Lots of outrage over the Oscar Pretorius verdict. Here is my two pennies worth.
I have a theory. If Judge Maspa found Oscar Pretorius guilty of one of the lesser murder charges then she would give Oscar the chance to appeal on the basis that the verdict was wrong as he should have been found guilty of culpable homicide.
So Judge Masipa decides to find him guilty of the lesser crime of culpable homicide but gives him the stiffest sentence she can - a sentence equal to that she would give for the lesser murder charge – thus limiting Oscar grounds for appeal. And if Oscar does appeal he runs the danger that a higher court might convict him of murder and give him a harsher sentence.
15 years. Let's see if I am right.
