I consider myself to be a law abiding citizen. I pay my taxes, exercise my right to vote, still pay my SABC tv licence (though I wonder why), pay for a post office box rental when post doesn’t get delivered because of striking workers, but now am drawing the line. The e-Toll saga just doesn’t make any sense and we need to stand together to fight this. Bad decision, after bad decision has been made and Gauteng motorists have been bearing the brunt of this. If SANRAL was such a great organisation to begin with, why has so much money left our country? Who was responsible and surely they must be held accountable? Talking of accountable, SANRAL needs to come clean and admit that it is in such a mess that the Department of Transport has now taken over. So the DoT has now kindly advised motorists that eTolls will be linked to your car licence, but that you will never pay more than R225 per month for it. Pull the other one, once it is linked, they can change the rate at ANY time and then where do we stand. Zwelinzama Vavi (formerly of COSATU) suggests court action to challenge the government on the legality of use car licences to ensure people pay eTolls. Why should we, the people, be forced to go to court for something that was never going to work in the first place. If it is not working in Gauteng, it will not work in the other provinces either. We already have illegally licenced cars on our roads, will this new plan just make the situation worse. What happens to all the money already collected from companies and those members who thought paying “was the right thing to do”. They must now feel cheated. Guess this money is never going to be paid back either. We have a wonderful country, but when bad decisions are taken, and then worse ones made to try to rectify the already bad ones, sorry, but am not going to pay for mistakes which we, the road users of Gauteng, had absolutely no say on in the first place.
