Once upon a time you could go to a Post Office and get pleasant service. Or else post a letter or parcel and be sure it got there promptly. The SA Post Office filled a definite need in South Africa. So what does the SAPO do under the ANC? 1) Put surly workers behind its counters, working at only 2 speeds: slow and stop. 2) Steal anything of value in parcels. 3) Go on strike, so letters and parcels don't get delivered but start to pile up massively in postal hubs. 4) Strike some more so as to ensure that tens of thousands of high-value previous customers (e.g. magazine publishers, municipal bills etc) now find other ways of delivering, such as couriers or e-mail. Result: less and less income coming in for the Post Office. Next result: bankruptcy, so SAPO workers don't get paid. Final result: the whole sorry mess virtually collapses, with thousands out of work. (Another 'good story from the ANC' and trade unions.) What a great case study for university students on how NOT to do business.
