Open letter to all under 25s in the working world who believe they should earn more…

My dearest friends,

Let me share a few pearls of wisdom with you about hard work, dedication, reward and recognition.

As a child growing up I watched my father and my grandfather and my mother and her mother go to an from work every day. My mom frequently took me to work with her and I had to hide under her desk to not have her boss find out I was there to not get her fired.

These people not once complained about a tea break, a lunch break or a promotion owed to them. Not once did they arrive back from lunch with any less enthusiasm for the day. These incredible people were on time, ready to give it their best and their all every single day. All issues and complaints were left in the car or at home and when they walked into work they were present, dedicated to each and every task at hand and inspired to be part of creating a new tomorrow.

Now you, my dear friend, rock up at work late. You start your morning coffee with several complaints on how hard your life is and how much work you have left from yesterday. You with the babbelas from phuza Thursday or the hat on your head or the smirk on your face when told to assist a colleague… You my friend have absolutely no pride in anything you do at work. You my friend are a thief of the future.

In our beautiful South Africa there is an average of 36% unemployment. People whose biggest complaint is not that they have to start work at 9am or don’t have enough money for that fancy Mozambique holiday in 3 weeks, but rather that the lining of their stomachs is slowly eating away at the last fat their emaciated little bodies have because they are so hungry they are in fact starving.

In one of the biggest blue chip companies in the country, a survey showed for every 1 employee there are 9 waiting for your job. And still this does not scare you?

You my friend have no right to sit there in your chair on the top floor and complain about the money you have when there are millions around the world that would work 100 times harder than you to only but earn a 10th of what you do.

Your tea breaks and lunch breaks and days you come into work late is an utterly audacious attempt at making yourself feel more important and managerial than you really are on this earth. Your Facebook, YouTubing and Whatsapping during the work day is a disgrace to those before you who worked their fingers to the bone to feed you and this nation. You are not entitled to promotion or reward because you gave it your all for 10 mins today. You are not owed any more than what was agreed to when only delivering the bare minimum required of you.

Our fathers, mothers, grandparents and others who fought so hard to make a life for you, would be utterly disgusted at your behavior.

Grow up! This world owes you nothing. You owe it to the world to be more!

Good luck out there.

Your Friend.
