I have just received a call from 087 310 9510 and spoke to a telemarketer from a company called Mondo, which claims to be an approved trade partner of Vodacom. The person that called would only identify herself as Sharon and refused to give me her surname. She also seemed confused as to whether she is an employee of Mondo or a sales agent (there is a legal distinction between the two).
I asked a few questions to which she could not give me satisfactory answers:
1) Who at Vodacom authorised the release of my personal details and information regarding my contract to Mondo?
2) Can it be proven that I expressly consented to this? and, if not,
3) Does this not constitute a violation of the Protection of Personal Information Act (PPIA) of 2013?
After asking these questions repeatedly, not receiving satisfactory answers and refusing to continue the conversation until my questions are answered, I was transferred to Sharon's Manager, who identified himself as Junaid Mohammed. I repeated the questions and his response was to apologise for the "inconvenience" and promise that a senior manager would contact me shortly.
I made the point that when this "senior manager" calls, I expect them to have answers to all the questions above as well as the contact name of whoever it is at Vodacom that authorised the release of my information to Mondo so that I can report the matter to the relevant authorities if necessary.
Will wait and see if I actually receive the promised call today.
To the management at Vodacom South Africa I direct two further questions:
1) Is Mondo an "approved trade partner" of Vodacom, as stated on their website (http://www.buymondo.co.za/)? and,
2) Is it company policy and common practice for Vodacom to pass on the personal and cell phone contract details of their clients to telemarketing companies
Has anyone else out there had a similar experience?
