Politics is rough. In my experience in Eden District, South Africa, it’s rarely for the people it’s suppose to serve. The word ‘politician’ should denote respect but instead it’s become a swear word amongst the general public. There seems to be corruption everywhere, from Plettenberg Bay, through my beloved Knysna, to Oudtshoorn.
I’ve spoken to you about Hardy Mills, the attorney before. He’s good at his job; a fine municipal lawyer and a strong litigator. On a personal level, he’s an intelligent and fun conversationalist, one of my favourites.
However, professionally, if activism can be called that, i despise the way the legal system benefits lawyers, advocates, politicians and political parties at the expense of the taxpayers but, when it comes down to the crunch, it’s the world we live in and thus i’m glad to have Hardy in my corner as i approach three legal actions against me this month by those who want to stop me digging for the truth.
One day, Hardy was clearly troubled. I asked him why which led to a long conversation about how he couldn’t stand what was happening to Oudtshoorn and that he couldn’t, in good conscience, accept work from the Oudtshoorn Municipality anymore as he believed that Mayor Gordon April, Municipal Manager Ronnie Lottering and consultant Drewan Baird were manipulating the system for their personal gain. In practice, they were his clients instead of the Oudtshoorn Municipality. His dilemma was that if he exposed them, there’d undoubtedly be retaliation.
Eden District needs more heroes and less politicians seeking personal power
He made that difficult decision and i’m glad to say that it was to be one of the good guys. He has started exposing the corruption in Oudtshoorn. In the process, he may lose monies that are owed to him which is doubly damaging as he’s helping me pro bono. I believe in the good fight so i was keen to use my social media network to advertise some of the issues (there was a big response). Timing couldn’t have been worse for both of us as, in our own way, we have far too much to juggle in our lives already.
This week, the first retaliation was fired. The Oudtshoorn Municipality issued such a radical press release against Hardy Mills that it was clearly personal and not governmental. I can only assume that they’re desperate. They even laid charges against him (which they can pursue with taxpayers money).
Hardy Mills has responded with a very personal letter in which he says that “what happened in Oudtshoorn after the 7 August 2013 by-elections is a disgrace that will remain a dark patch on our country’s young and proud history of democracy for many years to come. I played a big part in this shameful period and am prepared to accept full responsibility for the role I played therein.”
