The Doll Test: If this does not disturb and make you think nothing will.

I came across the “Doll Test” by accident when catching up on some reading. Interested. I did a search for further information on the Internet and came across this YouTube video titled The Doll Test which I found very disturbing.

Basically a number of very young children from different racial backgrounds, white, black, asian, latino and in-between, are presented with two dolls, one Caucasian white and the other Negroid Black and then asked a series of questions such as:

  • Which doll is the prettiest?

  • Which doll is the nicest?

  • Which doll is ugly?

  • Which doll is clever?

  • Which doll is good?

  • Which doll is bad?

Watching the children consistently apply the better attributes to the white doll is disturbing, to say the least. Seeing young black children according good attributes of white doll and the “bad” attributes to the black doll truly shocked me. I can understand the white kids being subjected to racial profiling by their parents and environment to see their paler skins are superior but am stunned that black children should, at such a tender age, already perceive themselves as bad, less attractive, less clever, less nice and of lesser worth.

What influences young black children to see themselves as inferior?

How does that influence their attitudes later in life?

How much does this explain racial attitudes in society?

Watch the video and see if you can make more sense of this than I can and if it does not leave you rethinking some of your own perceptions.
